Lilith Saintcrow: "Taken"

Title: Taken (UF + a bit of romance)
Ratings: V5; S2; H1
Publisher: Harlequin Nocturne (2011) (also available in e-book form)

Saintcrow is at her best in stories with dark, gritty urban settings, and that's what we have here. Sophie Wilson and her BFF, Lucy, go out on the town for a celebration that turns quickly tragic. Then, Sophie is kidnapped by a family of Carcajou (wolverine shape shifters) led by a very sexy alpha named Zach, who insists that Sophie is a shaman who can save him, his sister, and two brothers by calming their savage side.

Zach's family has been roaming the country since they lost their father and their shaman in a house fire. If a shifter family doesn't have a shaman, they  lose themselves to their animal nature and are rejected by other members of the shape-shifting community (the Tribe), so Sophie is the answer to their prayers.

Sophie has been trying to rebuild her life after a bitter divorce from her abusive brute of a husband, so she is not in the mood for another manipulative, powerful man. As she tries to figure out what to do next, the family is attacked by Upir  (vampires)disgusting, murderous vampires who seem to have personal reasons for going after Sophie.

Zach must overcome his feelings of guilt about past family events, and Sophie must decide whether or not to help Zach's family and achieve her new destiny. The two are obviously attracted to one another, but rapidly escalating events never allow them to share more than a kiss.

I enjoyed this book. It had just enough grit, romance, and suspense to hold my interest from beginning to end. The other members of Zach's family—Julia, Brun, and Eric—have their own unique personalities that contribute to the depth of the story.
